LONDON (AP) — A lawsuit by Prince Harry, Elton John and five other public figures accusing a newspaper publisher of using private detectives and listening devices to illegally snoop on them should go to a full trial, a British judge ruled Friday. Judge Matthew Nicklin rejected a bid by the publisher of the Daily Mail to dismiss the case without trial, saying defense lawyers had not delivered a “knockout blow” to the claimants' case. Associated Newspapers strongly denies the allegations and asked the judge to throw out the case. No date has been set for the trial, where Prince Harry could give evidence. He unexpectedly attended the March hearings in the Associated Newspapers case, though he did not take the stand.

Publisher Associated Newspapers (ANL) had sought at hearings in March to have the case thrown out, saying the claims that were brought in October 2022 were outside a six-year time limit for legal action. Harry, the younger son of King Charles, along with Elton John, and the other five claimants accuse ANL, which publishes the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday, of phone-hacking and other serious privacy breaches dating back 30 years. The judge overseeing Trump's fraud trial imposed a partial gag order on Trump's lawyers. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's fraud trial in New York expanded an existing gag order to bar Trump's lawyers from commenting on confidential communications between the judge and his staff. Judge Arthur Engoron's wider gag order came after Trump's lawyers made what the judge characterized as "on the record, repeated, inappropriate remarks" about his law clerk. They "falsely [accused] her of bias against them and of improperly influencing the ongoing bench trial," Engoron wrote. "The threat of, and actual, violence resulting from heated political rhetoric is well-documented," Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron wrote in a fiery court order Friday afternoon. Trump has violated that gag order twice since the trial began last month. They have been "falsely accusing her of bias against them and of improperly influencing the ongoing bench trial," Engoron wrote. Violating the gag order "shall result in serious sanctions," he added. He has fined Trump a total of $15,000 for twice violating the gag order that was imposed early in the case.

CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial has expanded a gag order in the trial to extend to Trump’s attorneys after continued lengthy discussions about the judge’s communications with his law clerk during court this week. In a written order Friday, Judge Arthur Engoron prohibited Trump’s attorneys from making any further comments about confidential communications between the judge and his staff inside or outside of the courtroom. The second fine – $10,000 – came after Trump appeared to reference the clerk when speaking to reporters outside of the courtroom. Engoron said he has a right to seek counsel from his clerk and Trump’s legal team has no right to know what they are. “She’s a civil servant, she’s doing what I ask her to do.” Those notes are “confidential communications from my law clerk,” Engoron said Thursday, pounding on the bench.

A lead prosecutor and a judge involved in separate criminal cases against Donald Trump received violent threats within two days of the former president warning that he was "coming after" his foes, court documents allege. Prosecutors allege Arthur Hanson, 59, of Huntsville, Alabama, delivered the threats in voicemails left for Willis and Labat on Aug. 6. Smith cited the same post in a September court filing seeking a gag order against Trump. Later in August, Trump was booked and had his mugshot taken at Fulton County jail, which was run by Labat. Trump was already facing dozens of felony counts in three other criminal cases by the time he was charged in Georgia.

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Prince Harry was a "prime target" for the tabloid press and must have been a victim of phone-hacking, his lawyer told London's High Court on Wednesday as the trial in the British royal's lawsuit against a newspaper publisher nears its end. MGN, owned by Reach (RCH.L), is fighting the lawsuit and says there is no evidence for the accusations. The claimants' lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court on Wednesday that the case against MGN was "inferential", stressing that phone-hacking and other unlawful information gathering was a covert practice. But, he added, the court could find that Harry was a victim of phone-hacking because of the prevalence of the practice at MGN newspapers and the level of press interest in the prince. "The newspapers regarded him as a prime target, perhaps one of the most prime targets, in the sense of royal stories drive newspaper sales," Sherborne said.

Prince Harry became the first high-ranking British royal to take to the witness stand in more than 130 years this week in a court case over alleged phone-hacking by U.K. media group MGN. The group claims that senior editors and executives at MGN were aware of and encouraged the wrongdoing, including phone hacking — the illegal interception of voicemails. MGN, publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People, has previously admitted that its titles were responsible for phone hacking. Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) lawyer Andrew Green said there was no evidence to show Prince Harry was a victim of phone-hacking. "To have a decision against me and any other people that come behind me with their claims, given that Mirror Group have accepted hacking ...

REUTERS/Hannah McKayLONDON, June 7 (Reuters) - Prince Harry said phone-hacking was carried out on an industrial scale across the British press and he would feel a sense of injustice if the High Court in London ruled he had not been a victim. I believe phone-hacking was on an industrial scale across at least three of the papers at the time and that is beyond doubt. In response to Green's suggestion that Harry wanted to have been a victim, the prince replied: "Nobody wants to be phone hacked." Apple execs didn't mention AI once during the company's WWDC keynote. It was a deliberate choice and a stark contrast to other Big Tech companies that have embraced the term. During Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon's first quarter earnings calls in April, AI was cumulatively mentioned 168 times, for example. Most other Big Tech companies would likely tout these as "AI innovations" to appeal to the current enthusiasm around the term. The word wasn't mentioned one time during the entire keynote, even though many rivals would likely use the word to describe the Vision Pro headset.

Handelsblatt published a series of stories detailing unreported customer complaints and possible data mishandling. One of the leaked documents contained a Tesla policy to only discuss customer complaints verbally, not in writing. Thousands of documents leaked to a German newspaper indicate Tesla enforced a company policy that discouraged creating a written record of customer complaints involving acceleration, braking, and crashes. "Do not copy and paste the report below into an email, text message, or leave it in a voicemail to the customer," Tesla instructed employees, according to files leaked to Handelsblatt. Handelsblatt reported conversations with dozens of those affected by the complaints, including some who showed reporters video of the incidents or their communications with Tesla.
After an intense few days in which the fate of ailing lender First Republic was finally determined, veteran banking analyst Christopher McGratty was looking forward to some calm. Minutes after the start of regular trading, however, the regional bank stocks he covers for KBW began plunging. "I was like, 'Hey, it's a good day to catch up, it seems like an orderly kind of day,'" McGratty said in a phone interview. "I get back to my desk, and I had 40 emails and 10 voicemails, and my screen was completely red." The sharp selloff in regional banks sparked by the March failure of Silicon Valley Bank resumed Tuesday, catching Wall Street analysts and investors off guard.

LONDON, April 26 (Reuters) - Prince Harry is not criticising his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, or Britain's royal family over a "secret agreement" with Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm, his lawyer told London's High Court on Wednesday. His lawyer David Sherborne told the court on Wednesday that Harry did not bring his lawsuit previously because of the agreement with NGN, which denies its existence. Sherborne said Harry was "told more" about phone hacking in 2012, when Harry says in his witness statement that he was told his voicemails had been intercepted, "but that was essentially dealt with by his family ... and their solicitor". "This is no criticism of the queen or his family," Sherborne said. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but watched proceedings by video link, Sherborne said.
London CNN —Buckingham Palace and Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers reached a secret agreement over historical phone hacking claims, court documents filed on behalf of Prince Harry allege. Officials at Kensington Palace, which represents Prince William, told CNN it does not comment on legal proceedings. Prince Harry states that his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was aware of settlement talks. NGN said it has no comment regarding the suggestion that it made a confidential settlement with Prince William. The company also claims that Prince Harry ought to have brought his lawsuit sooner.
Despite having the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth to take on the Murdoch group, Harry said attempts to get an apology from them had been stonewalled. "This goes to prove the existence of this secret agreement between the institution and senior executives at NGN." William's office said it could not comment on ongoing legal proceedings and NGN had no comment on the deal with William. The queen gave her backing for him to pursue his case and seek an apology from Murdoch himself, he said. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but would be watching proceedings by videolink, his lawyer David Sherborne said.
